What’s a CTA? (and why every artist needs one)

Have you ever posted your artwork on Instagram and TikTok and hear…crickets? The issue might not be your art. It might be your call to action, or CTA.

A CTA is a short, clear prompt that tells your audience exactly what to do next. Without it, people often admire your work but scroll on. With it, they’re far more likely to engage, whether that’s leaving a comment, signing up for your newsletter, or buying a piece.

Why CTAs Matter For Artists

People need direction. A CTA helps turn passive viewers into active supporters by guiding them toward meaningful actions like visiting your website, attending your show, or joining your email list. It’s one of the simplest and most powerful tools for making the most out of your social media and online presence.

Here are some CTA ideas you can use today:

  • After posting a carousel of different art pieces, add the following to your caption: “Which one would you hang in your home? Tell me below👇”

  • “Sign up for my newsletter to get first access to new pieces.”

  • “Come see this piece in person at (Gallery Name or event) next weekend! Join my email list for free tickets”

  • “Click the link in bio to shop limited edition prints of this piece- available this weekend only!”

How to Use CTAs in Social Media Posts:

  • Keep it action focused. Start with a verb: “Join”, “Shop”, “Comment below”, “Tag”.

  • Make it natural. Your CTA should feel like a friendly nudge, not a hard sell.

  • Place it strategically. Put it near the end of your caption, after you’ve told a story or shared something meaningful.

  • Limit your CTAs per post. Too many options or instructions can overwhelm people into doing nothing.

Start using CTAs consistently and watch how your engagement shifts. Sometimes, the only thing standing between you and a sale, comment, or connection is a well-placed ask.
