How to Use Hashtags Effectively

✅ What exactly is are hashtags and how do you use them effectively?

If you’ve ever posted your artwork on social media, you’ve probably seen or used hashtags, but do you know what they actually do?

Hashtags are searchable tags that help categorize content across social media. When you add a hashtag like #OilPainting or #LosAngelesArtist to your post, you’re making it easier for people interested in those topics to find your work. Platforms like Facebook and Instagram will use your tags to figure out what new feeds to place your posts on. If you use the hashtag #woodcarving for example, the algorithm will place your content on the feeds of users who often interact with other posts that include that topic.

What Hashtags Do:

  • Expand your reach: People browsing a hashtag feed or their explore page can discover your art, even if they don’t follow you because the algorithm will place your posts in front of audiences who consume content of the same hashtag.

  • Connect you to communities: Tags like #woodcarvers or #landscapeartist help you plug into broader conversations and groups.

How to Use Them Effectively:

  • Mix broad and specific tags. If you only use broad tags like #artist or "#painting, your posts are going to be buried immediately because of how often people are using those hashtags. Try to incorporate niche tags alongside broader ones. For example, a hashtag like #abstractart could be paired with something more specific like #EncausticCollage.

  • Get specific and relevant. Think beyond just #art. Use hashtags that describe:

    • Your medium: #oilpainting, #digitalcollage

    • Your style: #minimalistart, #popart

    • Your location: #laartist, #socalpainter

    • Your audience: #artcollectors, #interiorstylist

  • Don’t over do it. Aim for 5-10 targeted hashtags. Too many can look spammy.

  • Check before you post. Make sure the tag you’re using is still active and relevant. Some hashtags fade out over time. To check how popular a hashtag is, search it on the social media platform of your choice. If the hashtag has zero or very limited posts attached to it, it’s not going to get you much exposure.

  • Research what similar artists are using. Browse the posts of artists you admire or who are in your niche. What hashtags do they use that seem to get good engagement? Make note and experiment.

Hashtags aren’t magic, but they are powerful when used with intention. Think of them as signposts, helping the right people discover your art. Using hashtags thoughtfully helps your work get seen by the right people. Try experimenting with a few new ones this week and see what happens!
