What is a Marketing Funnel?

If you’ve ever shared your art online, chatted about it at a show, or sent a newsletter, you’ve already been using a marketing funnel. A marketing funnel is the path someone takes from discovering you to buying your work or even becoming a loyal collector.

Stages of the Funnel

  1. Awareness- “Who is this artist?”
This is when people first discover you, whether that be on social media, your website, or at a show. The goal here is getting eyes on your art.

  2. Interest- “I like their work.”
At this stage, they’re curious about your story and process. This is where you need to focus on building connection.

  3. Consideration- “Should I buy?”
Maybe they’ve followed you on social, signed up for your emails, or asked about pricing. At this stage, your goal is to make it easy for them to stick around and to stay on their radar.

  4. Action- “I’d like to buy.”
At this stage you should focus on eliminating friction. Make sure your checkout process is simple and your buyer doesn’t face any obstacles to making their purchase.

  5. Loyalty- “I want more.”
The relationship doesn’t end with a purchase, in fact, it’s just the beginning. Continue to nurture relationships with buyers and make sure to keep them engaged. Engaged buyers become loyal collectors.

Why is a marketing funnel important?

The funnel helps you focus your energy. Instead of shouting into the void for people to buy your work, you’re gently guiding people from the initial point of curiosity all the way through to collecting. Each stage requires a different goal and each goal keeps you on track for building a loyal and engaged network of buyers.
